| Description | Purity >95% by HPLC. Magainins are antimicrobial peptides that inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi and induce osmotic lysis of protozoa. Magainins are originally extracted from the granular gland secretions of the skin in Xenopus laevis. Magainin 1 and 2 are closely related peptides. Magainin-2 is a 23-mer peptide present in 5 copies in the magainin precursor (aa83-105, 129-151, 175-197, 221-243, 267-289) that displays an amphiphilic helix when bound to acidic phospholipids, forming a pore composed of a dynamic peptide-lipid supramolecular complex. These antimicrobial peptides have broad spectrum, non-specific activity against a wide range of micro-organisms, including viruses, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, yeasts and fungi. |
